Intravitreal Bevacizumab (Avastin) in the Treatment of Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy
Nusrat Sharif, Naima Zaheer, Shadab Hassan, Muhammad Kashif Habib, Nadeem Qureshi
From January to July, 2008, 214 eyes of 179 patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy were treated with intravitreal injection of 1.25mg / 0.05ml avastin. Overall 149 eyes (69.6%) showed complete regression of neovessels, 48 eyes (22.4%) showed partial regression while 177 eyes (7.9%) showed no regression. Ocular complications of any severity were noted in 9.3% eyes.
Prevalence of Eye Diseases among Patients Presenting at Eye Out Patient Department at Fauji Foundation Teaching Hospital, Rawalpindi
Shahzad Waseem, Anusha Pervaiz, Dujanh Bhatti
Data was collected over period of one month at Fauji Foundation Hospital, Rawalpindi. Out of 1065 patients examined in Eye OPD, refractive errors were most common (29.2 %, 311 patients), followed by cataract (27.1%, 289 patients). Other common eye problems were glaucoma (10.9%, 117 patients), corneal ulcers (8.7%, 93 patients) and chalazion (7.8%, 84 patients).
Effect of Diabetes on Central Corneal Thickness
Muhammad Kashif Habib, Naima Zaheer, Nusrat Sharif, Shadab Hassan, Hanif Malik.
From the out-patient clinics of Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital adult patients with diabetes were selected as cases and age and gender matched patients without diabetes were selected as controls. Patients with any ocular or systemic condition which affects the corneal thickness, patients with history of corneal or intraocular surgery and contact lens wearers were not considered. Central corneal thickness of all patients was measured using the Topcon specular microscope. The mean CCT value in diabetics was 508.22 ± 32.28 µm and in non-diabetics was 509.62 ± 31.61 µm.
Cup Disc Ratio: Agreement between Fundus Biomicroscopic estimation and Heidelberg Retinal Tomograph
Sabeen Chaudhry, Mustafa Abdul Hameed Ismail
This study was conducted to compare the Cup disc ratio (CDR) measured by Heidelberg Retinal Tomograph (HRT) with fundus bio-microscopic assessment. In normal subjects, there was strong correlation between the two methods when assessing the mean horizontal and vertical CDR (r =0.718 and 0.769 respectively). In glaucoma patients, there was good correlation between the two methods in mean, horizontal and vertical CDR values (r = 0.461, 0.490 and 0.357 respectively).
Surgical Management of Posterior Capsule and Complications in Congenital Cataract Surgery
Shahzad Saeed, Amer Yaqub, Tahira Ayub, Sadia Humayun, Saad Mushtaq Malik, Rumeesa Iqbal, Mujaddad Rehman, Zenab Noorain
In this study, 28 eyes of 21 children with congenital cataract of non-traumatic origin were operated. Anterior capsulorhexis, lens aspiration and IOL implantation were done in all cases while primary posterior capsulorhexis and limited anterior vitrectomy were done on every alternate case. Posterior capsular opacification with posterior capsulorhexis was seen in 14.28% of eyes and without posterior capsulorhexis was seen in 85.71% of eyes.
Change in Intra ocular Pressure after a Single Intravitreal Injection of Bevacizumab versus Triamcinolone acetonide
Furqan Ahmed Khan, Zulfiqar Ali Khan, Abdullah Naeem Syed
A quasi experimental month study was carried out at the retina clinic of Al Shifa Trust Eye Hospital, Rawalpindi in which a total 60 patients over a period of six months were randomly treated with 1.25mg/0.05ml intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB) and 4mg/0.1ml intravitreal triamcinolone acetonide (IVTA). The mean IOP remained significantly higher in IVTA group as compared with IVB group at 30 minutes (p=0.039), 1 day`(p=0.001), 1 week (p=0.001) and 4 weeks (p=0.024).
Band Intrusion: A Rare Complication of Scleral Buckling
Irfan Karamat, ZubairSaleem, AftabAfridi, Nadeem Udin Riaz
A 16 year old male patient presented in Eye OPD with a history of scleral buckling 5 years back in his left eye. It was observed that sclearl band had intruded the globe and was seen in the vitreous cavity superiorly involving the superior two quadrants. Interestingly, adhesions had develpoed at the sight of band intrusion and globe was intact. No surgery was planed as the eye was quite and chances of globe rupture were very high.
