Measures to reduce the progression of Myopia

Stereo Acuity in Hyperopic patients and improvement in Stereo Acuity with spectacle correction of Hyperopia
Amna Nawaz, Mahmood Ali

The study was conducted to investigate the effect of hyperopia on stereo acuity and to assess the stereo acuity with and without spectacle correction of hyperopia.50 patients from Pediatric Department of Al Shifa Trust Eye Hospital were evaluatedfrom June 2013 to February 2014 after approval of the Institute’s ethical committee. All patients had visual acuity less than 6/6 before correction. Best corrected visual acuity was 6/9 to 6/6. 14(28%) patients had low hyperopia, 18(36%) patients had moderate hyperopia and 18(36%) patients had high hyperopia. After spectacle correction of hyperopia 33 patients (66%) showed improvement in stereo acuity while 17(34%) patients showed no improvement.

Incidence of Endophthalmitis in Adults after Cataract Surgery at a Tertiary Care Eye Hospital
Abdullah Naeem, Tahira Ayub, Amara Saman

The study was conducted to assess the incidence of endophthalmitis in adults after cataract surgery at a tertiary care eye hospital. It was a retrospective observational study, in whichrecords of 2935 patients were reviewed for a period of six months from 1st May 2014 to 30th October 2014, presenting at the general and subsidized OPD of a tertiary care eye hospital. The incidence rate of endophthalmitis was only 0.04%. Majority cases were of ECCE 76.92% while the rate relatively quite low in phacoemulsification 23.0%.

High Myopia, a risk factor for Primary Open Angle Glaucoma
Ayesha Khalid, Adnan Aslam Saleem, Danish Gani

115 high myopic subjects (≥ 6 D) were examined according to standard protocols, which included applanation tonometry, anterior chamber depth, perimetry and fundus exam. Visual field, cup-to-disc ratio (CDR), gonioscopy and intraocular pressure (IOP) criteria were used to define the presence of open-angle glaucoma. Out of these 63 (54.8%) were right eyes while 52 (45.2%) were left eyes. 49.6% of the patients were male and 50.4% were female. The high incidence of glaucoma in myopic subjects was statistically significant.

Outcome of Refractive Lens Extraction with IOL implantation in High Myopia
Tehmina Nazir, Badaruddin Athar Naeem

To determine visual outcome of relatively clear lens extraction for correction of myopia and observe the complications of this surgery. The study included 20 eyes of patients diagnosed as myopia meeting the inclusion criteria. Prophylactic 3600 laser was applied to the peripheral retina of all the patients and phacoemulsification or lens aspiration was done by the same surgeon. Post-operative BCVA and slit lamp examination was done on each visit. There was a marked improvement in post op visual acuity with P value < 0.001 which is highly significant. Residual myopia was around -2.50 in all the cases.

Exotropia and relationship of Orthoptic Assessment of Exotropia with its Surgical Outcome
Mehreen, SumairaAltaf

To find out the outcome of orthoptic management in exotropia and to compare the result of orthoptic assessment with its surgical outcome, a prospective analysis of all cases of exotropia during 4 months period (Jan 2011 to April 2011),was performed. The results showed that among 50 patients, 18(36%) patients completely attained orthophoria, 26(52%) showed residual exotropia and 6(12%) showed consecutive esotropia.

Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer Thickness Profile in Subjects with High Myopia
Aziz Jan Bashir, Adnan Aslam Saleem, Furqan Ahmad Khan, Farah Akhtar

The link between myopia and glaucoma remains murky, largely because of the fact that it is difficult to separate myopia-related structural and functional abnormalities from 'true' glaucomatous changes. Inthis study, patients of both genders aged 18-35 years having myopia of ≥ -6 D on refraction were selected as cases, and patients having no refractive error were selected as controls.RNFL thickness was found to besignificantly lower in subjects with high myopia as compared to emmetropes.

First looks can be deceiving!
Tayyab Afghani, ShoaibNaiyar Hashmi, Furqan Ahmed Khan, Hassan Mansoor

A twenty years old boy presented with a conjunctival growth in the left eye for four years duration which did not show any change in size. He had no history of bleeding from the lesion, irritation, trauma, infection or previous ocular surgery, and merely presented for cosmetic reasons. The examination revealed a visual acuity of 20/20 in both the eyes. The growth wasn’t adherent to the sclera and had prominent vessels. The growth looked like a benign lesion of the conjunctiva. The tough and vascular tissue was therefore excised and sent for histopathology. The histopathology showed the lesion to be conjunctival leiomyoma.
